Catholic College Bendigo

Catholic College Bendigo draws on diverse and rich history where three separate Colleges and aspects of life in Bendigo converge to make one united school.

In 1983 Marist Brothers’ College and St Mary’s College Bendigo amalgamated to form Catholic College Bendigo. The foundation Principal was Sr Mary Duffy. Over the next five years the College underwent a number of significant changed until, by 1988 it comprised to campuses – Junortoun and Barkly Street and all classes were co-educational. Over the next two decades a number of significant building projects were undertaken and the sites were renamed: ‘La Valla’ (Junortoun) after the village were Marcellin Champagnat began the Marist Brothers. Barkly Street was renamed ‘Coolock’ after the house where Catherine McAuley began her mission as the Sisters of Mercy. (Not to be confused with Coolock House on the corner of View and Valentine Street, the former home of George Lansell Jnr).

Today the College population is made up of 1880 students and over 200 staff. Students are offered a varied selection of subjects enabling them to make positive choices about their approaching adult life, including preparation for further studies or vocational training.

Further building developments are planned for the coming years to enable Catholic College Bendigo to continue to grow and meets the changing needs of the young people of Bendigo.

In 2003 students, staff friends from all years of Catholic College Bendigo came together to celebrate 20 years since the amalgamation of St Mary’s College and Marist Brothers’ College. Over 350 people attended a Gala Dinner at the All Seasons with displays of memorabilia and class photos. This was followed by Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral the next day. View the report of that celebration.
