Bendigo

Bendigo is a city of about 90,000 people in central Victoria, a state in the southeast corner of Australia. The town grew very rapidly in the 1800s, around one of the world's richest gold fields. Today the city has industries in light manufacturing, agriculture, mining, education and health. The wealth of the gold fields has left many beautiful buildings and tree-lined streets. In addition, there are many cultural and sporting events.

Bendigo's name comes from a famous boxer from the 1800s (true!). Officials tried to rename it Sandhurst, which is why we are in the diocese of Sandhurst. But now it is only called Bendigo.
Wikipedia entry on Bendigo

The Catholic Church in Bendigo has a strong connection to Paderborn. The Reverend George Henry Backhaus came from Paderborn, and did a lot to establish the church here, and can take much of the credit for our beautiful cathedral.
