Darren McGregor Dear Parents, Students and Staff

Sr Sylvia Williams

Last Friday I was in Mildura for a meeting of Mercy Principals. At this meeting we acknowledged that Sr Sylvia Williams will retire from her role of Principal of St. Joseph’s College Mildura at the end of this year. Sr Sylvia’s retirement will mark the end of 30 years of principalship in Catholic Colleges across Victoria.

Many of our community members will remember Sr Sylvia Williams who was Principal of our College from 1990 – 1997. Sr Sylvia has made an enormous contribution to Catholic Education and we are honoured to be one of the College Communities who benefited from her skills and experience as a Principal. We wish Sr Sylvia all the best in her
years of retirement.

Mr Michael Chalkley

On Monday, our Deputy Principal at La Valla, Mr Michael Chalkley will commence two weeks leave. Mr Chalkley is a tireless worker and leader in our College and we wish him all the best for his well deserved break. While he is away Mr Bill Gaskell will be the Acting Deputy Principal.

Encounter Days for Students and Staff

We are currently in the middle of the Encounter Days for Years 7 – 10. These are very important days for our students, as they provide valuable opportunities for our students to stop and reflect on where their relationship with Jesus is at this current time. The days explore this relationship through topics relevant to these students at their particular age. In a similar way our staff members have the opportunity to stop and reflect on their faith and spirituality tomorrow when they have a day with well known theologian Fr Richard Leonard SJ.

Gathering

This week’s Gospel reading finishes with one of Jesus’ most famous quotes. After talking to the disciples about working together, Jesus promises that “where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them” (Matt. 18:20). This is a very important piece of scripture for us. It tells us that when we pray together then Jesus is with us. However, it also tells us that when we act together as Christians in the name of Jesus then he is also there with us. This gives us the strength to know that there is great power in what we can achieve together for others. In our College community there are countless times each day when our students or staff gather and act in Jesus’ name. His presence is very strong in our community through these good works.
