On Tuesday 1 September Catholic College Bendigo held its annual Tim Ledwidge Memorial Medal Vote Count.
This award is given to the highest vote getter from the three Herald Sun Shield Football matches played during the year. This year our Senior Netball Team were also included in the count with the best netballer from the Marist Netball Carnival also receiving the much coveted award.
Tim who worked at Catholic College Bendigo from 1989 to 2006 was the Year 12 Coordinator, Sports Coordinator and coach of the First XVIII Football Team. He was a well respected and much loved teacher by both students and colleagues and to receive such a medal named after him is an honour, and now a proud tradition within the College. Both Tim’s wife Simone and father John were again present for this event and are delighted that the College remembers Tim in such an honourable way.
FOOTBALL
The Football vote count again this year was very close. After receiving 6 votes in the final round Liam McCarthy (MK7) managed to win the count by 1 vote over Jack Geary (JR10).
Liam was extremely proud, honoured and humbled to win this medal. He commented that ever since his brother Thomas won the inaugural Tim Ledwidge Memorial Medal that he also wanted the same honour.
He was extremely fortunate to even be at the vote count having only been released from hospital the day before with a plate and several screws being inserted into his collar bone after a freak footy accident on the weekend. His determination to be at this event just goes to show what an exemplary leader he is, as he also displays the same characteristics as a captain on the football field. Congratulations Liam.
The netball vote count comprised of the girls receiving votes across 14 games of the Marist Netball Carnival which was held in Adelaide in July. The girls enjoyed a very successful Carnival being placed 3rd overall. After the first 9 rounds voting was close with Maddison Exell on 38 votes leading Jessica Geary on 30.
In the last 5 rounds Maddison drew clear to win by a comfortable 12 votes. Congratulations to Maddi on an exceptional Carnival and being the inaugural Netball winner of the Tim Ledwidge Memorial Medal.
